How photography connects us to the world – Video.

This is a talk by David Griffin, photo editor at National Geographic on the power of photography to connect us to our world. As well as some superb images, he talks about how we all use photos to tell our stories.

What are photos to you, just something to look at, or do you want to tell a story with every shot? Please leave a comment.

Tips for better photography composition

There are very few “rules” to follow for better photography composition, and once you know these, your photography will improve no end.

By learning about how to frame a particular shot, you can turn a good “picture”, into a great “photo”.  I’ve been doing photography for so long, that these have become second nature, and you can apply these whether you have a camera phone or a pro digital SLR.

Top 10 tips for taking better photos – Easy Technique

OK, so lets be clear, I’ve added this with the tag “easy” since it covers the basic use of a camera to obtain better photos. While this is a good introduction, any pros or advanced users reading this might think I’m teaching them to suck eggs, this website is still pretty new, and I’m pitching to all levels.

What do you think, should I be going for the advanced techniques, or something aimed at everyone?

When to use flash – Advanced Techinque

Here’s a pretty cool video from Digital Days showing when to and more importantly when NOT to use your flash. It pretty much turns on it’s head the common conception that it’s only used at night time. Well worth a look.

I use a Canon 5D, and since Canon rate it as a “pro” series body, there’s no inbuilt flash. if you want it, you need to add an external flashgun. This is probably a better option since you have to actually think about the shot and whether you actually need to get the flashgun out of your bag

Do you think about when to use flash, or just accept when the camera pops it up ready to go?

Setting up High Key lighting & Low Key lighting video – Advanced Techinque

Here’s a quick 3 minute YouTube video detailing High-Key vs. Low-key lighting. This covers what ever photographer should know and is a good grounding to get started.

I’m a great believer that if you know the basics, the advanced stuff always comes a lot easier. It never fails to amaze me the number of photographers that start playing around with multiple lighting setups without a basic understanding of how light actually works.

What do you think — is it better to have a good grounding in the basics, or do you always want to jump right in and see what happens?
